On February 28th 2017, nsif patron and champion fundraiser Claire Lomas was awarded her MBE for services to spinal injury research at Buckingham Palace.
Since her injury in 2007, Claire has dedicated her life to raising money to fund a cure for spinal cord injury (SCI). She hopes that one day suffers of SCI will be able to feel sensation and have movement below the site of their injury.
Here at nsif, the shear amount of effort, enthusiasm and energy that Claire and her family put into fundraising always astounds us, there is no doubt that she deserves this prestigious award.
In 2016 alone Claire took on two huge physical challenges raising over £35,000 for nsif. She took on both a gruelling 12 hour walk at the Vitality London 10,000 and a five day challenge in The Great North Run. Claire described The Great North Run as her biggest challenge to date, made especially difficult by her being 16 weeks pregnant!
Claire also continued and expanded her hugely popular Road2Recovery events, including a motorcycle ride out and half marathon & fun runs. All of this on top of her hectic schedule of motivational speaking and travelling the length and breadth of the country to raise awareness and much needed funds for nsif. She is a fantastic ambassador for nsif and has inspired countless others to get involved by fundraising. With Claire’s incredible contribution we continue to edge ever closer to a cure for spinal injury. Thank you and congratulations Claire!
Claire will be putting on more Road 2 Recovery events this year:
Road2Recovery Charity Bike Ride: Sunday 14th May
Road2Recovery Charity Rideout: Sunday 7th May
Road2Recovery Half Marathon & Fun Runs: Sunday 18th June
All events take place in or around Melton Mowbray.
