Hessle Golf Club’s Huge Fundraising Year!

Last year saw some incredible fundraising efforts from our supporters: from Steven Smith’s London Marathon Challenge to Claire Lomas’ continued support which led to an MBE. As well as these fantastic efforts we were also nominated to be the Hessle Golf Club’s charity of the year. This association first came about as a result of long-time supporters Angela and John Pye who introduced the club’s captains to the charity’s work.

The Lady Captain, Dianne Kingswood, and the Captain, Shaun Kavanagh, both ran a large number of events throughout the year, keeping their members and the local community engaged in fundraising and the work of nsif. One of the events was a Race Night in which members gathered for a thrilling evening of horse racing. Additionally, there was an auction so those whose horses didn’t cross in pole position had another chance to win a prize later in the night. The evening was enjoyed by all and raised an amazing £1,000.

Another hugely successful event put on by Dianne was the annual charity golf event held at their very own Hessle Golf Club. This year over 40 teams entered the tournament from far and wide to battle it out for first place. Determined to raise as much funds for nsif as possible, Dianne took to the streets of Hull asking for sponsorship from an array of local businesses. Her efforts proved enormously fruitful and she managed to raise £3,000 from the day!

Diane fully embraced the adage ‘every little helps’ throughout the year boosting donations by implementing a number of smaller initiatives such as putting a collection box in Headshed – the local hairdressers, linking with the local college to provide beauty treats for the golf members and even a drive which included a cake stall, homemade chutney, jewellery and homemade ski bands and neck warmers. As if that wasn’t impressive enough, Dianne didn’t stop there, there were coffee mornings, fashion shows and sponsorships. Shaun also put on competitions every weekend fondly named ‘The Pink Pig’, in which losing golf teams would make a donation to the charity raising an impressive £800.

Through all of their hard work Dianne, Shaun and the Hessle Golf Club raised a monumental £10,400! Dianne told us “it gave us great pleasure to hand over the sum of £10,400. We have an awful lot of people to thank, the members and their friends who supported events, businesses who donated and sponsored events including:

Hull Mitsubishi Centre, FG Adamson & Son, Gro Marketing, Taylored Financial Services, Impact Refinishers-Accident Repair Centre, RBA Accountancy, SD Barker Construction, Yorkshire Windows & Doors, Joynsons Catering Equipment, Steve Alsop Professional, Landplan GB Ltd, Rollits Solicitors, Handelsbanken and Michael Ward of Portable Building Sales  who match funded our jar on the bar with a sum of £1,000 to name but a few.  There were also all of those who gave up their time to help organise an event.  Our thanks and gratitude go out to each and every one of you.”

Here at nsif we are blown away by the time and effort that has gone into the fundraising of the Hessle Golf Club. We are hugely grateful for this incredible amount that will make a significant contribution to the research, helping to make spinal cord injury a setback, not a sentence.
